African-Canadian Downeys in Nova Scotia

This not a conventional genealogy post, but I thought that I'd give it a shot. On behalf of a friend who is seeking a birth mother in Nova Scotia, I was wondering if anyone has any information about the African-Canadian Downey line(s?) in Nova Scotia. I understand that there is a family lineage that dates back to the American slavery era, and I was wondering if this was the only such line in Nova Scotia, or if there are others.

I realize that this is vague, but any info that might point me in ANY direction would be helpful.

Thanks.
