My earliest tracable Downey was James Downey, who first showed up in Litchfield CT around 1760. No one knows where he came from, but I'm thinking this family may have come from Virginia. James married Rachel Baker. They later moved to VT with his crony Ethan Allen as part of the land deal that Ethan put together. Ethan's mother's maiden name was Baker, for whatever that is worth. I would very much like to find James' parents and where they came from. Tradition holds that this family is Scottish, as they were all iron workers.
