I have a Mary Elizabeth Downey born Sept. 26, 1828 in Illinois. She was the daughter of Thomas & Jane Downey. Among her siblings were Jonston, Malissa, Amos F. and Martha (who married Ansel Sherman (a clergyman from N.Y.) All of these siblings were born in GA, both her parents were born in OH.

In March 1857, Mary married John Jessup, a recent widower with 2 daughters - Rachel age 3 and Olive born in 1856. According to the 1870 census they were living in Decatur Co. IN. A 7 year old boy named George F. ? was living with them at that time. I have no idea who he was.

In 1881 my grandfather, Edward Sherman Ambler (age 7) and his 5 year old sister Barbara Ella (known as Ella) were sent to the Cincinnati, OH Children's Home. Soon Ella was taken by the Jessup's (who were @ 53 years old at that time). They later went back and got my grandfather to raise also (according to family history they only got him because Ella grieved so for him.) Edward & Ella, their older sisters Lucinda and Dora and their pregnant mother Ann Ambler (a widow?) were admitted to the Madison Co. Infirmary which was a combination hospital/poorhouse in July 1879. They were all released in August 1881, when Edward & Ella were sent to the Children's home. We know nothing further of the rest of them.

According to Mary Downey Jessup's obit in 1914: "They had no children of their own, but they reared two daughters of Mr. Jessup, Mrs. Rachel Armstrong and Mrs. Olive Pavy who died in Indianapolis in 1912. They also reared three boys and a granddaughter making six in all." Apparently Ella was the granddaughter but Edward must not have been a grandson. I do not know who the other two boys were.

There were also several Downeys from Rush Co., IN. (not my Downeys) however since I live nearby, if my Downeys are not yours, let me know & I'll check out the Rush Co. Downeys for you as I'll be going back there soon for research myself.

Good luck - hope this helps you! Hope perhaps your Downeys and mine are the same & we can help each other!!!!!

Please reply directly to my E-mail address if possbile (I check it more often than I have time to check the Genealogy Forum)
