CHARLES ULYSES GRENAWALT, son of ISAAC and MARY GRENAWALT, was born in Harrison County, Missouri, six miles south of Lamoni, on November 2, l870, and passed away November 7, l92l, at the age of 5l years, 6 days.

He was married to URSULA DOWNING February l9, l890, and to this union were given five children, three of whom died in infancy and HAROLD VANE, who died in the service of his country, October 24, l9l8. IRENE HOPE alone is left to comfort her mother in this hour of bereavement.

It was in June, l903, that CHARLEY GRENAWALT opened the doors of his business in Lamoni and has served his customers with great pleasure and satisfaction.

He joined the Methodist Church in l9l2 and was a member of the Masonic Order and the Odd Fellows of Lamoni, the Commandery of Knight Templars, of Leon, the Shriners, of Kaaba Temple, Davenport, and the Eastern Star of Davis City.

He had been suffering with heart trouble for more than a year but did not consider the situation serious until April of this year when he had an attack while at his business. He seemed to get better and persisted in being at his place of business and waiting on everyone who came into the store. During the last few weeks he seemed to have more frequent attacks and passed away quickly, leaving the town and the surrounding country and the host of friends throughout the country to mourn his leaving.

The funeral was from the home, Thursday, November l7, Rev. Gray having charge at the house and preaching the sermon. The Masonic Lodge took charge at the grave.
The Masonic and Odd Fellow Lodges of Lamoni and the Commandery of Leon were in attendance at the funeral. Out of town people in attendance at the funeral were: Mrs. O.E. Nelson, of Jet, Oklahoma, a sister of MRS. GRENAWALT; W.P. Allen, of Wathena, Kansas, her nephew; G.R. GRENAWALT and family, of Omaha, nephew of deceased; Gene Gray, a friend and fellow hardware merchant of Albia, Iowa; and Henry Bell, of St. Joseph, Conductor on this branch of the Burlington Road and a long time friend of the deceased.
