“A very sad occurrence happened in our neighborhood Monday a week ago. Messrs. Samuel Hinton and William Downey was sawing a tree down which fell contrary to their expectations, and breaking a sapling which struck William Downey on the head, breaking his skull, and ended his life about 8 o’clock that night. The writer was on his way home from attending a funeral service at Carpenter’s Campground. On reaching Joseph Tuck’s house we witnessed a very sad scene. They had just carried Mr. Downey in from the woods, the blood streaming from his mouth and nostrils. The poor man was unconscious, could not move hand nor foot and remained in that condition until death. His beloved companion and three children are heart-broken and left without a home. But if we will do as we are taught in the Bible, they will not suffer. It seems that William Downey had a forethought of his sad fate. He told Sam Hinton about ten minutes before the tree fell, that he felt as if he would be killed, and that he would be saved, and wanted Sam to see that he was buried nice and decent and told him where he wanted to be buried.”
