Hi James, With reference to your finding of the meaning of the name being 'Fort of the People' I have to say I cannot contradict you- I can only go on what I've found. A translation of Fort of the People would be Dun na Dhaoine/ Dhaoinigh from which one could derive, though not directly, Dun Aonaigh. The spelling of the name has as, with all names changed over the years due to different pronunciations and a lack of writing(there was no bureaucracy in those days) What the original name was one can really only hazard a guess- thus the different meanings of the origin that we ourselves have. Currently in Ireland it is spelt O Dunaigh and O Dunai - which have obviously been condensed through time by pronunciation and accent etc. As regards the similarity between the Downey crest and the O' Brien crest, from what i've seen of the O' Brien crest the loins heads are facing a different direction. (What does the knight holding the O' Brien shield look like, if there is one? Is there a motto? As I said, i'm not overly familiar with it.) Rd. Notify Administrator about this message?
