The name Downey comes from the Irish Dun Aonaigh (pronounced Doon Aon-igh) meaning the fort of Aonaigh; Aonaigh being presumably a clan leader in ancient Ireland. It is believed to have originated in the Cork/Kerry region of South-West Ireland. Current Irish forms of the name are O Dunaigh (O Doon-igh) and O Dunai (O Doon-ey).

The crest is that of a red shield with three yellow lions.

Should you require more info do not hesitate to enquire and I'll see what I can do. Richard Downey, Ireland.
