ATHOL DOWNEY from Scotland before 1870's

Athol Downey is said to be the father of my husband's grandfather. Censuses list his birthplace as Scotland. His only child was born 5 Feb 1876 in MO. Athol died as the result of a horseback accident when his son was very young. His widow had remarried by 1880. Has anyone seen a reference to any Downey named Athol?
