Benjamin Downs/Downes married in Fauquier Co., Va., 24 Jan. 1792 to Bathsheba Bales. Widowed, Bathsheba remarried in Rockbridge Co., Va., 27 June 1820, to George Miller. Bathsheba eventually moved to Greenbrier Co., [West] Virginia, where she died at age 90 in Feb. 1866. Bathsheba also appears in records under the names "Bashira" and even "Issabel." Bathsheba's death record in Greenbrier Co. reports her name as "Issabel Downes," omitting reference to her second marriage to George Miller. Price Johnston, a son-in-law to Bathsheba, was informant on her death record.
In addition to a daughter [Jane ?], who married Price Johnston, Bathsheba and Benjamin Downs/Downes had at least two sons: Wilford Downs (ca. 1796/1799-1879) and William Downs. Wilford married Mrs. Sarah (Sentz) Monroe; William married Christina Sentz, sister to Sarah. Wilford and William continued to live in or adjacent to Rockbridge Co., even after their mother and sister (Mrs. Johnston) moved to Greenbrier Co. Wilford and Sarah Downs were parents of Rev. Wilford Downs, a Methodist minister of Baltimore, Md., and a member of the Virginia Military Institute class of 1847. I would like to correspond with anyone who knows anything about these families.
