The Horace H. Downs family can be tracked in the US census from 1840 through 1880 in Westport, Fairfield County, Connecticut. In 1840 and 1860, the index gives "Horrace." In 1840, there appear to be a teenage boy and a girl under ten. In 1850, the index gives "Downes." In the 1860 census, 77-year-old Sarah Perry--presumably Grace's mother--is living with the family. In 1880, son Joseph lives next door to his elderly parents. In 1860, 1870, and 1880 the neighboring familiies include several Perry households. Horace appears to have been a shoemaker, as were some Perry households. The window of census visibility is unusually long.
