In 1903 and 1904 city directories of St. Paul, MN, a David DOWNS is listed in the household of John Henry DOWNS (b. 01/03/1856 in Batavia, NY). John Henry was the son of Michael and Bridget (LAWLER) DOWNS, who were both born in Ireland, Counties Kerry and Clare, in the period 1825-1835. The family moved westward, with John Henry settling finally in St. Paul, where two of his siblings also lived: Thomas B. DOWNS and Ella DOWNS FITZGERALD. We do not have information on the complete family--but know of a brother Daniel and sister Mary, as well.

No mention was ever made to the present DOWNS generation of a family member named David--but there he was living in John Henry's household in 1903 and 1904! He obviously was a relative to be living with John Henry. They both worked at the St. Paul Foundry Co., where John Henry was chief engineer and David was a "fitter". Could this David be a son of the David who was born in 1836 in Ohio? We don't know whether this David was a cousin or uncle or sibling!

Jeanne Downs, Minnesota
