Hello! My great grandmother was a Downes. She was born in 1856. She is thought to have come from Cork. She cameto Australia via the Cape of South Africa. As far as I know she travelled alone. I am supposing she came looking for relatives but didn't connect. She married a Greek and their name was changes to Roberts. Apparently...rumour has it that she married while on board a ship to a Chant who was the ship's captain. Her father was James downes and her mother Mary Kearney, both from Ireland. I would be delighted if you could establish a connection with these names.

When I was in Ireland March 1999 I telephoned all the Downes in Cork. Made a connection with Michael Downes. We met and talked. His e-mail address is mfdownes@oceanfree.net

I'll leave it with you. Hope to stay in contact. Best Wishes for a happy New Year.
Claudette Palmer
