Barbara, Thomas Downes Sr. b.1611/12 England, d.21 Jan 1698/99 Dover, Stafford Co., NH., marr. Katherine (?) d.23 Dec 1702 Dover, Stafford Co., NH., was my 9G grandfather. Thomas & Katherine's only known son, Thomas Downes Jr. b.17 Mar 1854 Boston, MA., d.1711 Kittery, ME., marr.#1 bef. 1680 Martha (?), #2 Mary Lord d.26 Jul 1696 Dover, Stafford Co., NH., #3 24 Oct 1698 Abigail Roberts Hall (her 1st husband was John Hall) As I understand it, you are descended through Thomas Downes' 2nd wife, Mary Lord. A distant cousin of ours, John A. Downs of Conway, NH., has spent over 30 years going over original documents to research the Downs in New England. He also sent me a copy of a report by Wm. Ephraim Daniel Downes, who was a life member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. He was interested in the genealogy of his family and published "Thomas Downes of Dover and His Descendants" in the New Hampshire Genealogical Record, in 1909 -10. I wish that I had a copy of his "Edward Downes of Dorchestor and his Descendants", published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volumes 64 & 65. The following are some notes sent to me by John. Thomas Downes came to Boston, Massachusetts in 1650 on the ship "Defiance". Thomas was in Boston in 1652 where he witnessed the will of George Burden. The town of Dover, N.H. granted him land in Conchecho in 1656. He was taxed there in 1657. In 1675, he bought ten acres of the town and he was one of the petitioners to remain a part of Massachusetts in 1677. In 1670, Thomas sold Jediah Andrews of Salisbury "My late dwelling house and lot" on east side of the neck, bounded by Fore River, south by Mr. Raynor's land, north and west by The Common. In 1687, he sold Thomas Hanson fifty acres granted him by the town in 1656 at Conchecho near Mr. Raynor's. Thomas was constable in 1666. He was a shoemaker by trade. In the records in Boston, Massachusetts, Thomas Downs last name was spelled without the "e". In Dover, New Hampshire, the early records have the "e" added, then dropped on many of the papers. In his Downs Genealogy Report, John A. Downs tried to spell the last name as it was found on records, papers, wills, etc. Thomas Jr. was a sergeant and constable in 1706. He was killed by Indians at Kittery, Maine in 1711. Warrant of appraisal of his estate was granted Lieut. Tristram Heard and Capt. John Tuttle on April 20, 1711; administration was granted to his son, Gershom on april 14, 1711. All of his children except Gershom were by his second wife. (Printed in W.E.D. Downes report of 1909-10.) I will be glad to exchange info with you on our Downs lines,
