Yes Eric, there is a Santa Claus.
Someone out here is actually listening.
It's 1:30 in the morning in Australia, and I have just been on Genforum for the last 4hrs looking for ....(wait for it)
.....would you believe Winstanley's.
On a last check of my mail box before going to bed, I received details of a serach engine that directed me to a site on Winstanley Hall. As I was closing down all windows I got back to Genforum and thought "I'll just take a quick look at Winstanley".
It's unfortunate that when you post a new message on something like Genforum nobody gets advised. But when you post a reply an advice goes to the original author.
You should contact Harold Myers and Bill Downall both of whom appear on Genforum. They both have detailled records of the Downall family. We all have corresponded and exchanged data on early ancestors but more recent generations seem to follow "tribal" (direct) lines.
Like me, I am sure they would love any general information about the lives and times of the people in our records.
My wife's line comes from her great grandparents Grace Downall (1858-1922) and Peter Fearnley (1857-1904).
Their parents were William Downall + Ellen Rimmer and John Fearnley + Margaret Speakman.
William Downall's parents were Joseph Downall + Margaret Jameson and Joseph's parents were Thomas Downall + Sarah Mather. You should be familiar with most of these surnames.
The family have a number of Wills going back to 1492.
The names of Winstanley and Gerrard are also scattered throughout the tree. Winstanley appears commonly as wintessess to Baptisms, Weddings and Wills but I could only find two actuall in the family on side branches.
Do you recognise the names Miles Winstanley who married Elizabeth Downall around 1680 or Arthur Winstanley who married Annie Fearnley around 1910.
I would be interested to hear the scope of your information on Downall Green and the Winstanley links. Do you know any fellow searchers for some of the other surnames above or do you know any related web sites.
If you haven't seen it you may be very interested in the Billinge site http://www.billinge-history.comhttp://www.billinge-history.com .
I look forward to exchanging information after the Xmas holidays.
