My great-great-grandfather was Peter D. Dowell, b. 1835 Knox Co., Ohio, and the family records give his father as Elijah Dowell, b. abt 1786 in Scotland, d. abt 1861 in Ohio. However, I have found in multiple places on the internet and LDS sources that the same Peter D. Dowell (married to Ann Maria Ackley) was the son of "Oliver Elisha Dowell, born in Virginia". Is that one of those pieces of misinformation that is so easy to get into our data and so hard to correct later on? Does anyone know where the Elijah vs. Oliver Elisha confusion began or why?
