My great grandfather, James Annias Dowell was
1/8 Cherokee. He was born in 1835 in Macomb
McDonough Co., IL. His mother's name was
Sarah and she was born in TN. I think that
his father was also a George W. Dowell, who
was in McComb, teaching in the first school
established there in 1830/31. I think that
the family was in Polk Co., Mo in the 1840
census, but you know the 1840 census only tells you the name of the head of household.
In 1850 Sarah Dowell was living there with
the Elijah Mitchell family. She was born in
TN. James married Louisa Jane Rector who was
born in Bolivar, Polk Co. I will watch this
site to see if we can connect. Thelma K
