The question is problematic. The answer depends on your particular Dowell line, because the name originated independently in different places. Also, variations in spelling and pronunciation complicate the matter because in early times there was no uniformity in such things.

Most commonly the name is originally English. The earliest examples of the name come from England and Wales. By the 17th century the name is found throughout the British Isles, but predominantly in England, where the name was widespread in many different locations. In America the name invariably traces to English colonists.

The name was transplanted to Ireland by English Protestant settlers, and probably by Scottish colonists as well, but may also have been indigenous to Ireland.
