I don't know anything about George, but my wife is descended from some of the Archuleta County Dowells. My wife's ancestor was Nellie Dowell, born in Greenwood County, Kansas in 1872. She married James Melrose in Archuleta County. Several of her siblings also ended up in Archuleta County. Her half-brothers Jake and John both died there, Jake in a flood in 1911 and John in 1918. John never married, but I'm not sure about Jake. Other siblings included Gertrude, Laura (married Grimes), Mary (married McDonald), Clara (married Lloyd), and Grant. Their mother, Julia, was the second wife of Manley Dowell, who moved to Kansas from Ohio. Manley died in 1888 in Kansas. His widow went to Colorado to be with her children, and died there in 1900. I do have more information if this looks like the right family. I haven't been able to make any connection with George either.
