James, I info on George Dowell. He was brother to my g g g grandfather John Dowell. Both served in the Revolution and evidently John served at one time as George. But George did serve himself from Virginia and there is proof of that.I have his rev pension application which contains an affidavit from (my) John Dowell.I corresponded with one of George's descendents who lived in your state for many years back in the 1970s..then we lost touch.I have a copy of a DAR lineage sheet from someone who joined DAR in 1941 on the service of this George thru his daughter Nancy who married a Weatherred!!!(which I believe is incorrect; Nancy may have been George's step sister instead!) I think these Albermarle Dowells have been so confused and the various Johns and Georges so mixed together thru the years that the truth may never be found.Thats why I want to document and not just take as gospel what Ifind on a family tree unless proof is listed that can be verified.I have information from a history of North Carolina that describes where the old George Dowell homeplace was located. It also states that the graves of James Dowells parents (strange because James' father was George Dowell who moved to Indiana so there's something not right in this history) were on the old homeplace.I tried to hire a N.C. researcher to find the place for me but she was unable to and thinks the location is underwater now due to a flood in 1939!! I show that George Dowell moved to Monroe County Indiana about 1838 and died in I think 1845 (this is from my rather faulty memory). His wife was Jane NLN.May have been married previous to Jane (per DAR record).Had 3 known children and I would believe there were others that I never located. The three were Mary (Polly) married Reuben Coffey; Reverend James Dowell (baptist preacher) married Patsy Coffey, and Jane who married a Moore. They all moved to Indiana.I understand that George's grave was marked as a Revolutionary soldier but in 1984 I was told that his stone was in pieces.I would love to find some of his descendents to exchange and verify my info with. Thanks James for all your help on this.I will keep you posted on my search for the elusive George/John Dowells' parents but I really begin to believe that after 30 years searching I would have found them if they were findable. I will order Mr. Christofferson's book as you suggested.Glad you are back on the message board.
