Dowells of Menard Co IL
I've been going thru my old files on Dowells - been at this a long time and have lots old old stuff!.Found this that may or may not help someone researching ILLinois Dowells. I'm sorry I don't have the title or the author of the publication this was in. Just a photocopy someone sent me long ago! These Dowells do not connect to my Dowells to my knowledge. Some of you have corresponded with me in the past about a George Dowell (I have a George in Indiana) and I think this information may help you with your George Dowell. It has a picture of an old house called Dowell house and the article is so titled.Says the old dwelling was built by Thomas F Dowell in 1827 in Menard Co - and is back in a field a half mile west of Petersburg (at the time of this article)John Dowell who imigrated from Scotland in the 1700s and was a pioneer of Albermarle Co VA left sons, John, William, Ambrose and Thomas. All had large families and from them came the Dowell descendants in Menard Co.
Reuben Dowell migrated to KY in 1813; married Nancy Taylor.Reuben and Nancy Taylor Dowell were the parents of Thomas Dowell.Thomas married Anna Beck and they migrated to ILLinois in 1824 settling at Little Grove where the house is located and the land cost $1.25 an acre. They were the parents of 14 children: Joseph, Reuben, Preston Boe, George W, Lewis, Sarah, Martha (Montgomery), John, Thomas, Bluford, William, Isabel, Anna Beck and Samuel.Joseph and John died in childhood. Bluford went to war and never returned and Preston Boe went to Australia.William married Lydia Summers, grandaughter of Jacob Bale. and they had 3 daughters: Mary Ellen (belding) Frances May (Taylor) and Viola.Anna Beck Dowell married Eli Reep and lived on the family farm with her father.George Dowell married Polly Watkins, daughter of Thomas Watkins Sr and they moved to Mason County where they lived on a farm: They had 4 children:Thomas Franklin, Alvin, David and Mary (Mollie).George remarried after the death of his 1st wife, a second time to a Miss Reed of Mason County.Their children were George and Joseph Dowell.Joseph died when 20 yrs old and George became a surgeon in Indianapolis.Hope this helps someone.
