Looking for a possible marriage between a son of John W. & Mary DOWDY [DAWDY, DAUDY, and other variations]. The marriage would have happened in the 1860s between Mr. DOWDY and Emily AGERTON in Arkansas. Emily was born in Georgia about 1848. The marriage may have happened during or shortly after the Civil War. I haven't found the John W. and Mary DOWDY family on the 1850 census, but believe they should be in Tennessee. Two of their children [twins] were born about 1849-1850 in Tennessee. 1860 census for Big Creek Township, Hot Spring County, Arkansas, page 71, Post Office was Rockport, Dwelling #495 [Family # not listed], Lines 3-13. Members of the household were: John W. DAUDY, 48, M, Farmer born in Tenn [about 1812]. Mary DAUDY, 48, F, House Keeper, born in N.C. [about 1812]. Elizabeth E. DAUDY, 26, F, Spiner, born in Tenn [about 1834]. Daniel J. DAUDY, 24, M, Farmer, born in Tenn [about 1836]. John S.[?] DAUDY, 20, M, Farmer, born in Tenn [about 1840]. William A. DAUDY, 15, M, Farmer, born in Tenn [about 1845]. Francis C. DAUDY, 10, F, born in Tenn [about 1850]. James H.[?] DAUDY, 10, M, born in Tenn [about 1850]. Sarah J. WILLIAM [or WILLIAMS ?], 22, F, Weav--[?], born in Tenn [about 1838]. Sinthia J. WILLIAM [or WILLIAMS ?], 5, F, born in Ark. Mary L. WILLIAM [or WILLIAMS ?], 3, F, born in Ark. 1870 census for Wills Township, Saline County, Arkansas, page stamped #561, Dwelling #4, Family #4, lines 24-28, as follows: Mary DOWDY, 58, F, W, Keeping House, $800, $550, born in North Carolina. William DOWDY, 25, M, W, Farmer, born in Tennessee. Frances K. DOWDY, 20, F, W, Unoccupied[?], born in Tennessee. James DOWDY, 20, M, W, Farm Laborer, born in Tennessee. Wesley BECKWITH, 15, M, W, Farm Hand, born in Mississippi. I found land records at the BLM website, listing the following: John W. DAWDY, in Grant County, Arkansas, dated 6/1/1859, Little Rock Land Office. John W. DAWDY, in Grant County, Arkansas, dated 3/30/1874, Little Rock Land Office. John S. DOWDY, in Saline County, Arkansas, dated 2/5/1873 at the Little Rock Land Office, for 40 acres. [John S. DOWDY is probably the son of John W. and Mary DOWDY.] My g grandfather James Henry FENTER married an Emily DOWDY/DAUDY in Sept 1869, in Hot Spring County, Arkansas. James and Emily FENTER are on the 1870 census. I found information that said Mary DOWDY requested/wanted to be buried in the Fenter graveyard [Arkansas]. That could possibly be in Saline, Grant or Hot Spring County, depending on when she died. County boundaries were still forming. I looked at the GenWeb Tombstone Project, but couldn't find Mary DOWDY's grave in any of the above counties. It has been suggested Emily DOWDY/DAWDY's maiden name was AGERTON. She was from Georgia and believed to have been the sister of Mary Cordelia AGERTON, who married Absolum Martin TANNER. The marriage may have happened in Hall County, Georgia. Emily FENTER, wife of James FENTER, died on 6 April 1879. This date was in the Homestead land records. Her three children [two daughters and one son], are listed on the 1880 in Fair Play, Arkansas, as nieces and nephew, with the TANNER family. The daughters were ages 6 and 4, and the son was age 1 year. The two daughters were also listed with their father, James FENTER, on another day, in Traskwood, Arkansas. [The two townships were just a few miles apart.] I need to prove Emily DOWDY and Emily AGERTON are the same person, find the first name of her first husband, and if he died or they divorced. Can anyone help me? I've checked some marriage listings on the internet and in Ancestry. Does anyone have a copy of Mary DOWDY's will or information from the executor's or administrator's records, listing her children and her FENTER grandchildren? Does anyone know where and when she died, and where she is buried? She probably died between the 1870 and 1880 census. Notify Administrator about this message?
