Hi Pam,
I am working on a Laws family group, trying to sort them out by census and other records. I believe your Matilda Jane Laws can be found in 1850 in Benton Co., AL as follows:
1850 Census - Benton Co., AL - 28th Dist - 10 Jan 1850- pg 308
597-602-
LAWS, John 29b. NCDicher?
...., Malinda30b. TN
...., M. J. 10fb. TN<<<<
...., M.M. 1f b. AL
599-604-
LAWS, Diner 79 b. NC
...., Fanny 40 b. NC
...., Eliz. 34 b. NC
...., L.W.28m b. NC notation- blind
pg. 309 continues . .
LAWS, M.A. 10 b. TN
...., J.W.5 b. TN
In 1860 Dinah Laws is living with her son L.W. and daughters Fanny & Elizabeth "Betsy" Laws in Hardeman Co., TN. There is no sign of John and Malinda (Ward) Laws or their other children, but they must have been around as the daughter Matilda married there to Martin Vanburen Dowdy in 1859.John Laws and Malinda Ward were married in Monroe Co., TN in 1840 and Dinah Laws is found there on both the 1830 and 1840 census along with several other Laws.
I have lots of paper spread out here, but am no closer to figuring out who Dianah's husband was and which of her daughters was the mother of those two youngsters in 1850 census with her.
