This is why I have never used the Morman LDS records although everybody else swears by them. Given this mishmash of errors I doubt I'll be using them any time in the future. These are quite likely the same Samuel, researched incorrectly, incompletely or however you choose to phrase it by 3 different people.

Samuel was an Soldier who came to Canada from England as part of a British Regiment which either releaved or supplemented the troops already here. From what I have been able to find and or deduce he went to Quebec where he met and married Mary who is most likely the daughter of a Robert Green another British Soldier. Samuel fought with the regiment through the War of 1812 and in 1814 or 1815 in order to stay in Canada (Mary had sibling here too) he transfered to the Canadian Fencibles Regiment. In 1815 or 1816 when the Regiments were all disbanded he received a land allotment in the Perth and Richmond Military Settlement as a result of his 7+ years of military service. The records for this transaction only list him by name but he is accompanied by one adult female, and 2 minor children under 12, 1 male and 1 female. In no case is a legal description made for any of these people, however I think it is quite likely his wife Mary and their first 2 children. The early census for the Perth and Richmond Settlement done in 1819 lists the family with children of: Thomas, John, Nancy (or Anne) and Julia. No ages are given for any of them and a good deal of detective work is needed as the name is spelled Sdowdle.

I have never been able to find any other information on Thomas or Julia although Nancy married in 1833 in the Presbyterian Church to a Leckie or possibly Lackie. I'm not sure I have only seen a transcribed copy of the record. It is possible that Thomas could be Samuel Thomas and that is why I have lost track of him but I have never found reference to any other Samuel until the 1850's when his grandsons were born and then there are 3 Samuel's the son's of John, Richard and James.

The Isabella Dowdall born 1825 in Bathurst is most likely the first wife of John Dowdall, Isabella Cameron. Ann Dowdall born 1817 could be the Nancy mentioned previously. There was also at least one other Dowdall family in the Perth area Patrick Dowdall an Irish Catholic (who may have had sibling or older children) which may have been mixed into Samuels family. As I said a good deal of detective work is needed to straighten this family out. There are other errors in those records that I won't go into here. I have to refile a lot of my records as there are several branches of this family. John and James were each married twice and at least some of these cousins intermarried as well to add to the confusion.

Janet
