I'VE HEARD THE TALE OF THE MASSACRE AND READ SOMETHING OF IT YEARS AGO. AS I RECALL THE LADY IN QUESTION IS CREDITED WITH THE INVENTION OF SCALPING. HER FAMILY WAS KILLED IN A RAID. SHE WAS TAKEN CAPTIVE. ESCAPED AND WRECKED HER REVENGE BY KILLING AND MUTILATING HER TORMENTORS.
MY GRANDFATHER, AIMEE DESCOTEAUX b.1872IN QUEBEC, ALLEDGEDLY SPIRITED HIS BRIDE,MABEL DOW b.1886, FROM THE WILDS OF NEW HAMPSHIRE. THE FAMILY TALE IS A STATE OF FUED STILL EXISTS BETWEEN DESCOTEAUX'S AND THE NATIVE POPULATION OF THE LAKE WINNIPAUSAKI AREA. FURTHER THAT THE GOVERNMENT DISSOLVED THE RESERVATION BECAUSE THE OCCUPANTS WENT ELSEWHERE AND WERE ASSIMILATED. I DOUBT THERE IS BUT A GRAIN OF TRUTH IN ANY OF IT EXCEPT THAT THE FAMILY IS DESCENDED FROM OLD JACOB DOW,EARLY BAY COLONY MEMBER, AND FLED INTO THE WOODS TO LIVE WITH INDIANS BECAUSE THEY BECAME BAPTISTS AND THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASS. WAS TRYING TO BURN THEM AT THE STAKE.
