Just came across this posting and wonder if I might have a solution for you. I have come across several red herrings like this in my family tree where the child was given the name of someone the parents admired e.g. the landlord, the minister, etc. Then, as in your case, the name was handed down over the generations, leading unsuspecting family historians to believe it was their own bloodline.
My suggestion for you is that of Rev. Alexander Lockhart Simpson (1785-1861) licensed in the Presbytry of Kirkcaldy but appears to have ministered in Edinburgh - was also the Moderator of the Church of Scotland. He died unmarried.
