Hello Ian, Peter and Alex.

Both late 19th Godfrey Dow's were cousins of my gt grandmother Elizabeth Dow. They all descend from Godfrey Dow and Marrion MacArthur, married at Killarow, 1797. They had two children, Alex and John.
Alex is my gt gt gt grandfather.
John married Agnes Welsh at Govan, 1832. They had a number of children including John, born 1834, who in the 1881 Census is at 2 Derby Road, Pendelton with his son Godfrey age 19, and Godfrey, born 1843, who in the 1881 Census is at 106 Porter Street, Preston with his son Godfrey, age 7.
I had a great deal of trouble with this family until I found that many Dows were really named MacCalman or MacAlman and the surnames are interchangeable. In all of these families you will find individuals who were christened, married and buried under different names. In the same family some children may be christened Dow and some MacCalman. It appears that when they left the highlands for Glasgow and England, they were more likely to adopt the name Dow.
I would be glad to share info.

Larry
