Hi, to back up the posting on this Alice Dow in photo being daughter of George Winthrop Dow, I have the following:
George W "first went to Kansas", m. 1858 Mary Coates (died 1872-3)
In 1860 Kansas census, Walnut Creek,Brown County:
G.W. Dow age 33 farmer born Maine
Mary age 16 b.Ill
A.A. age 1 b.Kansas Terr.
William age 2/12 b.K.T.
Book also mentions George "caught by the Calif gold fever":
In 1870 San Fransisco census, ward 4:
Mary Dow, age 25, born Ill
Alice, age 11, b. KS
This is the only Alice in San Fran. at this time, and since the photo was taken there in 1872, I would say that this is same person. Mary was probably already dead at this time, or I would think she would have been in pic with daughter. I don't know where George is in 1870, but as the Book of Dow says, he was a wanderer all his life so who knows where he went off to. Why Alice has 'W' to name in photo is unclear.
Hope this helps,
John
