1910 census shows a George V. Dow age 37 with wife Jesse C. 31. married 10 years, 2nd marriage for both. 4 children, 3 still living: Norman G. 7, Fred B. 4, and George V. 3. All b. in NY of parents b. NY except youngest - he b. in RI. There is a Madeline F. Smith 12 in the household and listed as daughter. If this is a daughter by Jesse's 1st marriage, then I am not quite sure why she lists only 3 children livin - unless she meant by current husband.
Based on that I looked for George in the 1880 census on familysearch.org and found the following:
George D DOW Self M Male W 40 NY House Carpenter NY NY
Fannie DOW Wife Female W 34 CA Keeping House CA CA
Maria DOW Dau Female W 14 CA At School NY CA
Fannie DOW Dau S Female W 12 CA At School NY CA
Harry DOW Son S Male W 10 NY At School NY CA
George DOW Son S Male W 8 NY At School NY CA
James DOW Son S Male W 4 NY CA NY
Census Place Brooklyn, Kings (Brooklyn), New York City-Greater, New York Page 184B
It's not an exact fit, since the George who was 8 in 1880 has a mother b. CA - but the 1910 census has his mother b. NY. Nevertheless, I figure this is worth checking, since there is a close relationship to the data you gave. Let me know if you would like me to look at other census years for this family.
