Jeremiah DOW b. abt. 1786 of Lincoln, Addison, Vermont
Posted by: Ralph Baslow Jr. (ID *****3212) Date: June 18, 2003 at 20:05:45
  of 2066

I have attempted for many years to identify Jeremiah DOW, my 5th great-grandfather, who was born in New Hampshire abt 1786, and resided in Lincoln, Addison, Vermont by 1830. He was married to Polly "Molly" Roberts, 1779-1857, b. Pittsfield, New Hampshire, daughter of Jonathan and Hannah Roberts. They had one son Jeremiah Dow, 1816-1871, b. NH. The younger Jeremiah married twice to Phoebe Barnard and Phoebe Martelle. Children by Phoebe Barnard were Lucius b 1844, Susan b. 1846, Alonzo b. 1846, Lorenzo b. 1847, Mary b. 1849, Harvey b. 1852, and Ida b. 1863. Children of the younger Jeremiah by Phoebe Martelle were Amanda, b. 1867, Cynthia b. 1868, and May b. 1870.

In the "Book of Dow" Dr. Dow lists the younger Jeremiah, and son Lorenzo. He notes that he was known as Jerry, was a gentle, quiet Quaker. Parents unknown, but Dr. Dow speculated that it was highly likely that the younger Jeremiah was an unknown grandson of Bildad Dow.

There are no death records at the town or Vermont-state level for either Jeremiah, and no marked location of burial for either of them or their spouses.

According to the Book of Dow, Nancy Anna Dow, wife of Jeremiah Dow (ADADIE in the Book of Dow and a grandson of Bildad Dow) and her husband Jeremiah parted company in NH and she moved to Ripton, Vermont (adjacent to Lincoln) to be with her son , Newell Dow, b. 1817, in Pittsfield, NH; he married Elmira Folsom. There is little info on Newell. There is an Anna Dow (listed as wife or widow of Jeremiah Dow) who died in Bristol, Addison, Vermont on Feb 28, 1865; her death record lists her birth as Abt. Apr 1792 of Pittsfield, New Hampshire, daughter of John and Mary Dow -- I believe this to be Nancy Anna Dow.

Now some speculative questions, not to offend, but to add possibilities. Is it possible that 1) Jeremiah Dow, ADADIE, is one and the same with my 5th great-grandfather Jeremiah Dow, and that Polly Roberts was a consort, 2) that Jeremiah Jr. and Newell were really brothers, or 3) that Jeremiah Jr. and Newell were one and the same?

Any help in solving this long-standing mystery will be greatly appreciated!
