Morning Lawrence
Whilst there may be a tenuous connection, I am unaware of any proven link at present. The only DOW relative to migrate to the Americas that I am aware of, did so in the late 19th/early 20th century.
In my researches, I have not found any SIMPSON (& variant) ancestry. If I had, it would have assisted with understanding the inclusion. Amongst other things, I have tried searching for various combinations of the ALS part, eg AS, LS, AL ... etc, to no avail.
That name combination, ALSD, just suddenly appears in 1839 with no obvious leads as to why. That is, there are no obvious family/commercial/geographic clues leading to its appearance and its continuation down to myself.
Contrast this with my nother's family name of TANT. In the 1820s and 1830s, three TANTs suddenly appear in the north of Scotland; and start to include the names of "local gentry" in their naming patterns. So in this case, there are good explanations for the sudden use of non-TANT hereditary (groups of) names, although still no explanation as to why those first three TANTs migrated to a relatively remote part of Scotland.
Wishing you success with your search,
Alex Dow
