The only thing I have read is that the first 2 paragraphs may have been written earlier, but that the rest certainly was dictated to Shatwell by Thomas as he lay dying 2 days before his death, and that the paragraph by Phebe was included at the same time, not added after he died. I have not seen an original. I believe one of the reasons some genealogists insist it was a name is that she would not have used the word "lately" in front of a seriously ill husband, but I have no idea what the the basis is for the suggested scenario. Most likely it was all speculation.
