I've long had a brick wall in the person of my great-grandmother Mary E. Dow, died Oil City, Venango Co., PA 1952 and wife of William Waid 1865?-1928.
While the age for my Mary E. is not an exact match, my grandmother told me when I was little that sometimes women pared a few years off their ages for public consumption.
Anyway, my Mary was born in Tidioute, Warren County, NW Penna. Her headstone says DOB 1863; 1900 Census gives age 35 suggesting DOB 1865.
1860 Census for Deerfield Twp., same (Warren) Co., reportedly has following household (all born PA):
Joseph Dow, 47 (c. 1813)
wife Agnes, 36 (c. 1824)
dtr Catherine 14 (c. 1846)
son Charles E. Dow 12 (c. 1848)
son Hugh L. Dow 10 (c. 1850)
son Irvin M. Dow 8 (c. 1852)
son James M. Dow 6 (c. 1854)
DTR MARY E. DOW 2 (1858)
Son infant, 9 mos.
1880 Census for Triumph Twp. in Warren Co. has Agnes, now widowed, with 2 children at home: Mary, 22 and William 17 (c. 1863).
If any descendants of Joseph and Agnes can confirm/refute that Mary E. Dow b. c. 1858 is the Mary E. Dow who married William Waid from Crawford Co., PA and had children (eldest Ralph Dow Waid 1888-1933 was my grandfather) I'd be grateful.
