In the book,“Vital Records of Pepperell, Massachusetts” by George A Rice, Phinehas Douglass (Duglass) of Townsend MA married Abigail Barron on August 2, 1764 at the First Parish Church in Pepperell. Abigail was widow of Charles Barron and they had a son, Jonathon Barron.
Phinehas and Abigail had three children;
1. Lucy Duglass (Douglass), baptized August 11, 1765 d. 12 Feb 1856 in Shirley, MA married Ezchiel Gowen November 23, 1785 They had a daughter, Bathsheba Stevens Gowen on 17 Sep 1803.
2. Joseph Duglass (Douglass), baptized July 5, 1767 died January 7, 1851 in China Township, Michigan
3. Anna Duglass (Douglass), baptized September 24, 1769
4. Jonathan Barron, baptized October 9, 1763 (son of Abigail and Charles Barron, d. December 8, 1762)
Joseph was my GGGGGrandfather.
According to the book "History of Brookline, New Hampshire", Joseph Douglass married Amy Smith (daughter of Joshua and Hanna Baldwin Smith of Brookline)on November 25, 1790 in Brookline, New Hampshire. Moved to Amherst, MA.
According to the "Vital Records of Amherst, MA" (CLS film #0186128 batch C502211) Joseph and Amy had 11 children all born in Amherst, MA.
1. Amy Douglass, b. June 11, 1791 married 1st – Laban Tucker of Milbury, 2nd to Rugus Wait of Hardwicke, died February 22, 1852 in Milbury
2. Zebina Douglass, b. March 22, 1793 married Elsy Frost of Sudlow; had six children. Also fathered a son, William with an unidentified black woman.
3. Salome Douglass (I), b. March 10, 1795 died August 11, 1796 in Amherst.
4. Henry Douglass,b. December 21, 1796; married 1st to Elvia Thompson of Springfield, 2nd to Elira Chace. Died on July 26, 1852 in New York, NY on his way home from California.
5. Salome Douglass (II), b. September 13, 1798; died September 27, 1800 in Amherst.
6. William Douglass, b. January 29, 1801; married January 29, 1821 to Phebe Bisbee in Amherst; died August 16, 1862 in Amherst. Lived in Palmer, MA.
7. Joseph William Douglass, b. March 29, 1803, baptized June 30, 1816; married 1st to Esther Sawtelle on November 15, 1823 in Amherst, married 2nd to Abzubah Pierce on November 18, 1860. Had 6 children all born before 1839. Died September 12, 1868 and Esther Sawtelle Douglass died November 5, 1859.
8. Hannah Douglass, b. March 8, 1805, baptized June 30, 1816, married Arnold Chase on June 18, 1835 in Hadley, MA.
9. Mary Ann Douglass,b. May 15, 1807, baptized June 30, 1816,never married. Died December 5, 1827 in Amherst.
10. Chileab Smith Douglass, b. July 13, 1809, baptized June 30, 1816, Moved to St. Clair Michigan in 1845 and practiced medicine. Changed name to Solomon Gilbert in 1826. Died in 1895.
11. Frederick Stoddard Douglass, b. February 11, 1811, baptized June 30, 1816 d. January 7, 1888, married 1st to Charlotte Marsh, 2nd to Esther (d. December 28, 1887). Moved to China Township, Michigan around 1833.
Chileab Smith Douglass (aka Dr. Solomon Gilbert) was my GGGGrandfather.
