The problem is that no-one knows the correct lineage - it has all been lost in the mists of time. Perhaps DNA research will help sort things out, but I am not holding my breath.

Amazon has just re-printed A History of the House of Douglas, by Herbert Maxwell, and it is available at a very reasonable price (originals are around at about £800!). This is a good source of early Douglas history.

Or you could always rummage around in http://douglashistory.co.uk where various views are expressed.
