Jeanne,

The Black Douglas was a person (Sir James Douglas). He lived from 1286 until 1330 and was heavily involved in the Scots Wars of Independence. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Douglas,_Lord_of_Douglas

The name Douglas itself comes from the Gaelic dubh glas. It is a locational surname meaning someone who lived by the dubh (dark) glas (small river). Your ancestors may just have used the 2nd hald of the Gaelic form.
