Mourning was also a relatively common given name. The undertaker (contractor) for mid-18th century Aquia Church in Stafford was Mourning Richards. I believe he was from down in the Northern Neck or Middle Peninsula of Virginia. Mourning Smith, Sr. (c.1778-1853) and Mourning Smith, Jr. (c.1828-1853) owned several of the Stafford gold mines. They also dabbled with a gold mine in Spotsylvania, but I've not found them listed in any court records in that county. I'd not thought about the possibility that this given name might have come from a surname, but it's an interesting thought.
