I need some help and have absolutely no clue where to look to find out the truth. The family lore is that there were two Douglas brothers who left Scotland to leave the Black Douglas behind. My grandmother also swears that the two brothers were doctors, but one step at a time.... Supposedly, these two brothers left Scotland and relocated to London, changing their names in the process to Glass. Since there really was a Black Douglas, I don't know where to begin looking from there. This particular family has been a struggle to trace. The earliest actual person I have traced is a George Glass who married Sarah Butler. They lived in St Thomas, Devonshire when their son John Henry Glass was born in 1845. Sometime between the 1851 and 1861 census they moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can either prove or disprove this? What I've found is that there is usually some truth in family lore, but not always 100% facts. My grandmother was under the impression that the Black Douglas was some kind of criminal gang, but I found that it was a political situation! Ahhhh, the joys of theories!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please email me directly at jmcolby_hicks@yahoo.com Jeanne Notify Administrator about this message?
