I am looking for information on my 3G-grandfather, Alexander Douglass (sometimes spelled Douglas), supposedly born in Ireland in 1817. Most of the information I have on him is from “Three Hundred Colonial Ancestors and War Service” (1934) by genealogist Elizabeth Leach Rixford (who was the niece of Alexander’s wife, my 3G-grandmother). Here is the information I have gathered to date: - Born 12/25/1817 (according to Rixford) - Born in Ireland (according to Canadian census records) - Methodist (according to Canadian census records) - Emigrated to the Eastern Townships area of Quebec sometime before 1849 - Married Esther Phelps of Stanbridge, Que., daughter of Nash David (aka David Nash) Phelps and Elizabeth Hungerford (also, Esther’s sister Caroline was the mother of Elizabeth Leach Rixford) - He and Esther had 9 children, all born in/around Stanbridge: 1) Herbert (b. 1849) 2) John (b. 1851) 3) Bertha (b. 1853) 4) Ida (b. 1855) 5) Nancy (b. 1859) 6) Charles A. (b. 1860) 7) Caroline (b. 1862) 8) Thomas Leslie (b. 1867) 9) Alfred E. (b. 1869) - Died on 11/22/1871 in Stanbridge and buried in the Pigeon Hill Cemetery (along with Esther) Also - according to Rixford he was 17th in descent from Robert Bruce, King of Scotland. Please note that there were numerous others named Douglas and Douglass in the same general vicinity of Quebec during this time period; we do not know whether they are connected or not. Most important to me is to determine who his parents were and where he came from in Ireland (or elsewhere). Any information or suggestions on where to go with this are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
