Hi Kerry, -Do you have the exact date of your great grandfather George's birth? I have the year as 1815. You mentioned in your first note that your ggrandfather married Susannah Patterson. In your 2nd note you mentioned "Mirtle (sic) Irene Doughty, daughter of George Doughty and Susan Paterson". Do you know which of those names of your ggrandmother is correct? -I have Margaret Cousland's father's name as James - with a question mark. That's the way I got that name. Meaning, my source was not sure of it. Margaret's father could have been Archibald - or Archibald James (???) If we could get a copy of Margaret and James Doughty's wedding certificate it should have her parents' names recorded on it. The English wedding certificates that I do have copies of state: "SON OF.......DAUGHTER OF..... " Sometimes the occupation of the father, etc. is also recorded on the certificate. I'm not sure how to go about getting a copy of their certificate, though. My English one's were copied for me by relatives in England. -I have Margaret's death date as May 20, 1909. She was buried in Galt. I plan to go over to the Galt cemetery ( or cemeteries) later this spring. I'll see what I can come up with and let you know. Some cemeteries have great records. I got copies of actual plot diagrams, etc., of another set of my great grandparents who are buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto. -You mentioned that the marriage of John Doughty to Connie Spears is "simply wrong". You could be right. Do you have a reason for saying that? My records say that: "John (Jack's) first wife was Berthe Marchildon & their son John was born in June of 1910. On Oct. 1, 1911, twins were born: George and a girl who died of dyphtheria while still in the maternity ward. Berthe died as well in Oct. 1911. Jack's sister Jeannie raised the two sons, John & George..........and in 1917 Jack married Connie Spears, one of Ambrose Smalls chorus girls. Connie eventually left Jack and disappeared." This info. was from Doug Scott and his relatives, not the Ambrose Small book. The book has many errors. The movie that was made, "Sleeping Dogs Lie" was even more incorrect. The movie had Jack Doughty hanging himself in prison, which is definitely not true. My father (as a child) remembered meeting Jack when Jack got out of prison. -The information I have for Sir George Doughty is as follows: "He lived his life in Scotland. He had an inheritance title. Behind Sir George lies a relation to the Duke of Buccleuch (pronounced "Buckloo"). Drumlanrig Castle, a magnificent monster of a palace (pink) on the Anglo-Scottish border, is the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch.".............I have not been able to follow that up. Douglas Scott's relatives described Margaret Cousland: "She was tall and must have been of strong physical endowment." - (She is slender in the picture I have of her.) - "It is believed that she must have been a force to be reckoned with in her family and in the community." Margaret's sister Elizabeth died when her only son James Hutton was very small. Margaret and James Doughty raised him. James and Margaret's son Archibald WAS married twice. His first wife was Frances Conway who died (Jan. 1877, I believe. I'll have to double check on that). Douglas Scott recorded: "Their son Archibald married Frances Conway who died giving birth to their only son, James Francis. James Francis was also raised by Margaret and James Doughty. The James mentioned in the1881 cencus must have been James, the son of Margaret's sister Elizabeth. -Archibald was Douglas Scott's grandfather. Doug Scott lived with his maiden aunt 'Nettie' for many years and got most of his information from her. I wrote him a couple of months ago to see if he had any updates for me, but haven't her from him yet. He must still be in Florida. -The family portrait that I have is 11 by 14 inches. (I mentioned it in my last message.) I don't know how to scan and email it without your email address. I also have a picture of my grandmother Violet Doughty when she was young, and a few pictures of my ggrandfather, James Doughty, which I could scan. I WOULD be interested in any pictures you have. -I'm ot of town for the next week or so. If I hear from you I will get back to you upon my return. All the best, Marilyn
