Hi Marilyn - I got both your e-mails. Thanks very much - there ‘s a lot of info there. Based on what you told me, I've dug up a bit more information, some of which you may have already: - a Jane Doughty married Lewis Millar in Tillicoultry in July 1852 (source: International Genealogical Index [IGI]). My guess is that this is a daughter of "Sir" George and sister to James and George - one Mary Robertson Doughty was christened December 17, 1854 in Tillicoultry. Her parents are given as George Doughty and Mary Robertson (source: IGI). My guess is that this George is son of "Sir" George and brother of James (and Jane above?). I have more info on George below and his family. You mentioned in your message that he had been married twice, so my guess is that this is his first wife. You didn't mention a daughter named Mary but she might have died in infancy and didn't figure in any family records later on. - James Doughty and Margaret Cousland appear in the 1871 census of Ontario, living in Douro Township (just east of Peterborough). It shows James, age 40 (this is wrong), Carder in factory, born Scotland, Presbyterian; Margaret age 39 (wrong), born Scotland, George age 20, factory hand, born Scotland, "Archy" age 19, born Scotland, James age 17, born United States, William age 14 born Ontario, Margaret Ann age 12 born Ontario [note: originally the census taker wrote "U.S." for birthplace of both William and Margaret Ann but then crossed it out and wrote "Ontario"], John age 9 born United States, Jennett age 6, born United States, Grace age 4 born Ontario, Agnes age 2 born Ontario. - James and Margaret are shown in the 1881 Ontario Census living in Galt, on James St. as you said. It shows James, Carder, age 55, Margaret age 53, Archibald age 29, carder, William age 24, flax spinner, Margaret Ann, age 20, weaver, John age 19, carder, Jeannette age 16, Miliner, Grace age 14, Agnes age 12 and James, age 4. This James (age 4) was a bit of a mystery at first but I think the answer is that he is Archibald's son. I found a birth record for James Doughty, born January 8, 1877 in Elora Township, son of Archibald Doughty and Frances Cousley. His birthdate makes him exactly age 4 in 1881 which is the age given for him on the census. My guess is that Frances must have then died and Archibald and his son James went to live with James and Margaret in Galt (I need to recheck this record to see what Archibald's marital status was given as). In fact, I did find a Frances Doughty listed in the index to death records for the year 1877. Although I haven't looked at the registration yet, the death took place in Elora Township on February 16, 1877 which is just shortly after the birthdate for James on Jan 8/77. This must have been Archibald's (first) wife. I found a marriage record for Archibald Doughty, residence Paris, father James Doughty and mother Margaret Cousland, age 31, born Scotland, weaver, married Bessie Hope February 28, 1883 (this would be Archibald's second wife). - the 1901 census for Galt shows the following info for James and Margaret: James, born June 4, 1826 Scotland, Scotch Origin, Presbyterian, Carder, Year of emigration to Canada: 1850 [note: the writing is very faint and it looks like 1850 but of course this is wrong as their sons James and George were born in Scotland after 1850 - in any case "emigration to Canada" should be understood to mean "emigration to North America"], Margaret, born Scotland June 6, 1829, Grace born Ontario May 10, 1870, Agnes, born Ontario June 10, 1872. - James' death record shows that he died July 28, 1904 in Galt, residence James Street, age 78 - The 1901 census for the village of Ayr shows Archibald Doughty, widower, carpenter, born Scotland November 22, 1852, emigrated to Canada 1853 [note: this seems more likely, although as I said "Canada" should likely be interpreted to mean "North America", specifically the U.S., for reasons below], Clara A. age 17, Harold H. age 13, William age 11, Mary (or Margaret? ) age 8. His death record states: Archibald Doughty, age 58 died of peritonits March 6, 1904, residence Main St., Ayr. His age is off by about 4 years and the record also says he was born in Canada, which is wrong. - my ggrandfather George (eldest son of James and Margaret) did indeed have four children: Mirtle [sic] Irenne Doughty was born July 4, 1885 in Galt, dau. of George Doughty, Carter and Susan Paterson. However, she died in Toronto February 16, 1896 when she would have been 11 (this date comes from the index to death registrations for the year 1896 - Ididn't look at the actual registration itself). My grandmother would have only been 4 years old when her sister died so I doubt my father even knew about her as he never mentioned her. - I found your ggrandfather James' marriage record: James Doughty, age 23, born Lawrence, Massachusetts, laborer in cloth factory, parents James and Margaretha [sic] Doughty, married at Preston December 25, 1876 to Louise Plogradt, dau. of Ludwig and Christine Plogradt. The witness was one Joseph Doughty - I don't know what connection he is. His age puts his birthdate at around 1853 or 1854 which is consistent with emigration to the U.S. in 1853. I also found a birth record for their son James: James Doughty, born at Preston Sept. 3, 1879, father James Doughty, fuller and mother Louisa Plugrod. One correction to your notes: this son, James, died in Toronto, not Palmerston. The info from his death record shows: James Doughty, born Preston, died of pheumonia aged 21 on Jan. 12, 1901 at 64 River Street, Toronto. As is happens, 64 River Street was the home of his uncle George, the brother of James and Margaret of Galt. - I found a death registration for one Archibald Doughty, died July 5, 1881 at Hespeler, aged 41 days, Presbyterian parents. The names of the parents aren't given but my guess is that they might have been your great-grandparents James and Louisa. - I found a marriage record for William, which reads: William age 27, machinist, father James Doughty, mother Margaret Cousland, born Hawksville[?? Writing is hard to read - it's definitely -----sville, could be Dawtsville or Hewittsville but my guess is it's Hawkesville, which is a tiny village located a little northwest of Waterloo], married Agnes Burnett in 1884 (I forgot to record the date). His age puts his birthdate at about 1857, which is consistent with the info in the 1871 Ontario census. - I also found a marriage record for John: John doughty, aged 25, parents James and Margaret Doughty, born Maine, U.S. m. Emily Chater in 1887 - the marriage records for John, William and your ggrandfather James show birthplaces which are consistent with the birthplaces given in the 1871 Ontario census - I looked for a death record for Margaret Cousland but there is nothing registered in 1909. I went back as far as 1903 and as far forward as 1912, but found nothing. - I mentioned that George Doughty , brother of James and son of "Sir" George, lived at 64 River St., Toronto. The only info I've found on him so far is from his death record: died August 13, 1898 aged 70, 64 River Street, Toronto, occupation Gentleman, born Scotland, Presbyterian. Heart failure, organic heart disease, died suddenly. He was buried in the Necropolis Cemetery in Toronto. His age puts his birthdate at about 1828. - I looked up title records for 64 River St and found out some additional info on this family. I didn't find a Will for George, but did obtain a copy of a Will for his wife Agnes. Her will names as her beneficiaries her children Agnes Anderson (see her marriage record below), William Doughty (died Nov 8, 1930), John Doughty (died August 11, 1949), Jeanie Doughty (died July 4, 1944), Barbara Doughty (later Barbara Lillico), and Eliza Lovatt as well as grandchildren George Doughty Lovatt, Douglas McPherson Lovatt, Douglas William Doughty, John Doughty and George Doughty. She had extensive land holdings, including 14 homes on Roslin Avenue and property at 64 River St. in Toronto. Agnes died May 27, 1914 aged 78. Her father was James Strachan and mother Barbara Mill. - I found a marriage record for Agnes Barbara Doughty, age 21, residence Toronto, Presbyterian, born Massachusetts, U.S., married Alex Anderson. Her age puts her birthdate at about 1858. Unfortunately the names of her parents are not given (which is unusual), but almost certainly this is the daughter of George and step-daughter(?) of Agnes. What is interesting is that she was born in Massachusetts. My guess is that George must have followed his older brother James in emigrating to Massachusetts and ultimately to Canada. - I also got a copy of the book by Frederick McClement on Ambrose Small, which has some information in it on the Doughty family. Some of these details are probably not accurate (in particular, the information about Connie Spears, John Doughty's second wife, which is simply wrong). He says there were only 5 children (wrong) and that Jeannie was the eldest (born in Toronto in 1874), followed by William, then John (born 1877), then James (died in infancy) and then Isa (Eliza). There is no mention of either Agnes or Barbara. The author says that Jeannie's father was born in Glasgow and that her mother was born in Brechin and that they were married in Glasgow just before they departed by boat for Canada. If this is the case, it means George must have left Massachusetts after his daughter Agnes Barbara was born, returned to Scotland, remarried and then emigrated to Canada. If the info on Jeannie's birth is right, it places George in Canada by 1874. Maybe you can figure it out. Death records for William, John and Jean (whose death dates I have) would cast some light on their origins but this info is not yet available on microfiche at the Ontario Archives. - the book by McClement does have a picture of John Doughty but I can' tell if there is a family resemblance; I only have a few pictures of my grandmother as well as a picture of what may be her sister, Margaret. Do you have any pictures of your great-grandfather or perhaps his parents or siblings or do you know if anyone has these pictures? I would love to get copies if possible. - I tried to verify the "Sir George" story. I checked Burke's Peerage and also Debrett's for the years before and after 1850 but there is nothing I can find about a Sir George which would seem to connect. There is a family listed in Burke's Peerage under the name Tichbourne, which later took the name Doughty but there are no Georges and they appear to be an English family from Sussex or Suffolk. There is a record in Whitaker's "Peerage Baronetage" of a Sir George Doughty, born 1854, Kt. Bach., (1904) M.P. for Grimsby, England but he doesn't appear to be any relation. - I did come across one bit of information which may yield a clue as to the name of "Sir" George's father. There was (or is) a tradition amongst Scottish families of naming children as follows: 1st son after father's father; 2nd son after mother's father; 3rd son after father; first daughter after mother's mother, 2nd duaghter after father's mother and 3rd daughter after mother. Although the rule wasn't always applied strictly, it was applied to some extent: James and Margaret Cousland's first son should have been named George (he was) and their third son should have been named James (which he was). Their second son (Archibald) doen't fit the rule, assuming your info is correct that Margaret Cousland's father was named James. In the case of my great grandfather George, his first son should have been named James (which he was). Likewise, Archibald's first son (born 1877 in Elora) should have been named James and it appears he was. This means that if James (who married Margaret Cousland was the eldest son of "Sir" George, the father of "Sir" George must have been named James. It's not much to go on, but it's something. Hope this has been of some use to you. If you do know of any pictures, let me know. If you would like them, I could scan and e-mail the few pictures I do have of my grandmother, taken in Palmerston. They're not very good but you might see some family resemblance. Cheers, Kerry.
