Doughty Family Genealogy Forum

I brought one of my books to work and looked in the forum to see if any information might help someone; sorry I didn't look before.
"History of Charles County, Maryland" Tercentenary Year, 1958, by Margaret Brown Klapthor and Paul Dennis Brown; page 36: Francis Doughty first appears in America in 1637 in Massachusetts. There he preached the Presbyterian doctrine until he was forced to leave the colony the the established church. He emigrated to New Amsterdam where again he gathered a congregation of the English inhabitants of the place. This time he ran into fifficulties of a political character as his daughter Mary married Adrain Van der Donk, principal lawyer of the colony and political rival of stuyvesant. Van der Donk died in 1655 and upon the death of his powerful Protector, Doughty, his daughter and other members of his family moved into the 'English Virginias.' He left for Maryland in august, 1657, where he purchased land from Giles Tompkins in Charles County. Here he at last enjoyed the religious freedom which he had so long sought. He married Governor Stone's sister Ann and seems to have made his headquarters at Nanjemoy where Governor Stone lived. It seems likely that he gathered a church at that place and though an old man, he was still vigorous enough to go about the country teaching and baptizing. It is interesting to note that it was Doughty's daughter Mary, who as Mary Doughty Van der Donk (or Vanderdonck), and later as the wife of Maryland's Hugh O'Neill, practiced medicine in Charles County in the seventeenth century."
"There is no record of the place or date of Doughty's death. His work in Charles County was continued by the Reverend Matthew Hill, who established himself in Charles County in 1669."
Page 29: "Perhaps the most amazing of all we find a practicing woman physician appearing in these same records. Mary Doughtie Vanderdonck had a regular practice in the middle of the 17th century and she was not reluctant to carry her debtors into court."
I know I have seen further information on this man because my ancestors also lived in the Nanjemoy area of Charles Co., MD. In fact I believe I am a descendant of Gov. William Stone. My other lines in that area are Noland, Graves, Smallwood, Hutchinson, Garland, and O'Bryan. If you come across information on any of these people, please post it. Hope this information helps you.
