Hi, James Preston Doughty is my Great Grandfather.He was married first to Martha Ann ELLIS, Oct 25, 1864 - Coles, Illinois. While traveling with her to land he had signed up for homesteading Martha died in child birth near Carthage, Barton, Missouri (Aug 1866.) (Interesting story for another time -land signed for before returning to Ill. from Civil War.) Sep 1866 near Rolla, Phelps, Missouri, his newborn son died. James had no way to feed him. Heartbroken he returned to Ill. where eventually he married Mariah Caroline ELLIS, 28 Mar 1867, Coles Co., Illinois.(Martha's cousin.) They had 10 Children. I have more if you want it. This story (and others) was told to my mother, Nadyne E. Doughty REED by her grandmother, Mariah Caroline Ellis DOUGHTY, who told it to me.
