Benjamin Doughty of Flushing, NY m. Abigail Whitehead
I am trying to sort out the Doughtys of Flushing, and I can't connect Benjamin Doughty, carpenter of Flushing, who married Abigail Whitehead in Grace Church, Jamaica NY on 25 Nov 1720.
We know that although he was previously identified as a son of Samuel Doty and Jane Harmon, he is most likely descended from the Rev. Francis Doty.
Jacob Doughty, son of Elias, son of Rev. Francis, also married into the Whitehead family.Plus, Benjamin became guardian to Jacob's grandson Samuel Stockton (son of Jacob's dau. Amy). But - A case could be made for Benjamin becoming SAmuel's guardian based on the connection between his wife and Jacob's wife since Abigail (Whitehead)Doughty was 1st cousin to Amy (Doughty) Stockton.
In addition, another Doughty also married in Grace Church in Jamaica NY near the same time as Benjamin. It was Thomas Doughty a nephew of Jacob and son of Jacob's brother Francis Doughty.Thomas married Sarah Clement on 14 Mar 1728.
So it would seem that there has to be a close tie between Benjamin and the children of Elias Doughty, son of Rev. Francis Doughty. Another researcher has listed Benjamin as being the son of Benjamin Doty (another brother of Jacob) and Hannah Hinchman. Her theory is that Hannah had time to get pregnant with one child before her husband died - and that child is the Benjamin who married Abigail Whitehead.I have no idea what evidence she has.
If anybody has any further info connecting, or disproving a connection between, Benjamin Doughty and the other Flushing Doughty's - please let me know.
Thanks,
Teresa Terry
