William M. Doughty is William Martin Doughty, his father may be John Doughty of NC. His sister, Nancy C. Doty was b 1805 in Buncombe Co NC, she married Samuel Laughlin in Lincoln Co MO 5 Jan 1830 and they went west to Oregon. Other possible siblings are Larkin(g?), possibly b 1798 in TN (FamilySearch IGI), Joseph, Robert and Rebecca. I descend from Nancy Doty. William was a trapper and had an Indian (Shoshone) wife. After he settled in OR in 1841, he married her in a Christian ceremony (23 Oct 1842) and she was given the name Mary or Martha. She was previously referred to as Pigeon Shoshone. They had the following children: Lucy b 1836, Elizabeth b 1839, Stephen Wallace b abt 1842, Lydia E. b abt 1852, Mary Jane b abt 1854, Anna b 1857, William b abt 1859, Joseph b abt 1861, Martha b abt 1861 and Richard b abt 1864. Most of their children married and stayed in OR. I have found no descendants from any of the male chidlren of William and Mary Doughty. Here are notes that I have in my PAF file: I believe that when Wm. married his Indian wife she was given a Christian name - either Martha or Mary. In 1860 census she is referred to as Martha, in 1870 & 1880 census she is referred to as Mary. The 1880 census shows Mary as a widow, that she was born in Idaho (possibly the Green River Valley), with sons William, age 21 born in Oregon, Joseph, age 19 born in Oregon and listed as 1/2 Indian, and Richard age 16 born in Oregon. This 1880 census also indicated that Joseph's father was born in MO, I believe this is incorrect since everything else indicates Tennessee. Wm. was a fur trapper in the Rocky Mountains in the 1830s. According to MEN FROM CHAMPOEG, he was born in Tennessee, removed to Missouri (presumably with his parents), then was a trapper as a young man. He settled in the Oregon Territory in 1841 with his Shoshone wife, and was married to her in 1842. I'm trying to research the Doughty line back from Nancy and William, but to date, have had no luck.
