I'm not sure how to interpret this information but maybe you can? It doesn't seem to explain why James would will Mary's husband Robert Eley land if she was the daughter of John? But what if she is the granddaughter of James? John being his son? Anyway here is what I haveJames Doughtie, Isle of Wight Co. Va. wit. to will of Wm Smelly, 5 Aug 1689. (Chapman: 49). While a resident of Isle of Wight Co. in 1896, he purchased land in Nansemond Co. Va from Thos. Jernigan. (Henings: 4, 1711-1736). James Doubtee/Doubtey/Doughty, had a grant of 198a. in Lower Parish of Isle of Wight Co. Va., near King Saile bound by James Collins, 26 Apr. 1698 (Va Patents: 9-151). James Doughtie & w. Elizabeth, Nansemond Co. Va sg. deed 8 June 1699 to Robert Eley* of Isle of Wight County, "all our right in land patent containing 198a. in Isle of Wight Co. Va" (Isle of Wight Co. Va: Deeds, 1, -1688-1704, pp278-279). *Robert. Eley m. Mary, dt. of John Doughtie. James Doughtie/Doughty, had several grants in the Upper Parish of Nansemond Co. Va for transporting persons into the colony. The first was for 300a. in 1700 for transporting six persons; the second was for 308a on both sides of Bennett's Cr. for transproting seven persons in 1704.
