Dougherty in Muscatine, IA (Roswell 1819, Henry 1826, & Philo 1830, of NY)
We (I and several other family members) are seeking information relating to Roswell Dougherty and his family / parentage.
What we know: Roswell Dougherty was born in New York c. 1819. He married Margaret Ann Walker on 03 Dec 1845 in Muscatine County, Iowa. Margaret was born Ross Co., Ohio c. 1823-35. It seems that Margaret had moved to Muscatine County, Iowa with her sister’s family, Benjamin and Leah Jane Downs (maiden name Walker) around 1845. Both families moved to Ross County, Ohio (where the Walker family lived) between March 1849 and May 1850. Roswell and Margaret had two children when they lived in Muscatine County: Mary Catherine Dougherty (c. 1848) and Roswell Dougherty, Jr. (c. 1849).
There appears to be (at least) two Dougherty families in Muscatine County at this time; a group from New York and that of J. B. Dougherty of Springfield, Ohio. We believe that Henry & Philo Dougherty may be his siblings (info below)
Henry Dougherty born 20 Jan 1826 in New York, married Ellen (Helen or Eleanor) Thacker, father of James, Mary, Chas, & Clara (between 1850-56), occupied as a cooper, fought in Union Army, died 23 Jul 1890, buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.
Philo Dougherty born c. 1830 in New York, was apprenticed to Adam Reuling (confectioner, a German immigrant) in 1850 census, died 19 Jun 1851 with no children, buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.
If anyone can provide any information or clues relating to any of these, both I and my other family members would be greatly indebted. Also, if you are a descendent of Roswell or Henry Dougherty, please contact me so that we may share information ([email protected]).
Thank you a million!
Sincerely,
Will Dougherty, III
