I have just returned from a recent trip to the UK. I have been trying to sort this Scots/Irish thing too. Seems that Glasgow in the southwest part of Scotland and the northeast coast of Ireland were just a short boat ride apart. There was lots of travelling between these 2 areas. My Irish relatives ended up in Scotland at times. My Scottish relatives ended up in Ireland. I have been searching for my Dougherty and Holmes relatives. These names are quite common in both these areas. It is frustrating at times. My Dougherty's and Holmes's both emigrated from Ireland although I am sure they started off in Scotland.
