Bill, I have been researching our family too. We go back to a Barney Dougherty born in Ireland in 1822. Even my Husband James Dougherty's father who we thought was named Bernard has Barney on his birth certificate when we found it filed at the Pierce Co. Courthouse in Ellsworth , Wi. His great grandfather came to the US in l854 and had 5 children raised in that area of Wis. but no mention was ever made of Scotland , Englan or Mich. But perhaps if you searched for the name Barney it would help... all we can ever find is born in Ireland. But we are hopeful
