Thanks so much Howard. I am posting my reply here so that others might share the benefit. My Tisdale Gilbert Doty, who fought in the civil war for the New York Mounted Rifles ended up in Texas with a different wife and six other children. He gave his birthplace (same birth date) as both Pennsylvania and Ireland. (Frankly I can see why he might have told a local census taker in Texas that he was from Ireland soon after the great war of Northern Aggression.)

My husband also had a relative who frequently gave misleading info to census takers. Turns out he had run off with his nurse and had several children by her and was probably trying to avoid his wife. Who knows why Tisdale said what he said.

In any case what I am looking for is any document more reliable than a census, or a self-reporting family book, which is where I saw the info you had given me. Anybody got anything?
