I'm convinced now that Daniel C. Doty in the Linn Co. history is Daniel C. Doty (1799-1837), son of Daniel Doty (1765-1848), one of the founders of Middletown, Ohio. However the Linn Co. history confuses Daniel C. Doty with his father in terms of the date and place of birth and date of death. Also, whereas the Linn County history says that James, Elias, John, and Dan are sons of Daniel C. Doty, the first three are in fact his brothers and the fourth is himself, as detailed in the Ethan Allen Doty book. The elder Daniel Doty (1765-1848) settled near the future Middletown in 1796 and remained there the rest of his life. His son Daniel C. Doty moved to Rock Island, IL, in 1837 and invested in building a steamboat for the upper Mississippi. The steamboat sank in the Mississippi shortly after in began operations. In 1844 Daniel C. Doty returned to Ohio. Daniel C. Doty's brother James Miller Doty was born in 1809, which matches the date given in the Linn County history, and his first wife died in Linn County, IA, in 1848. Daniel C. Doty's brother Elias moved to Bertram, IA, in Linn County, and died c.1837. Daniel C. Doty's brother John moved to Atalissa, IA, in Muscatine County. Aretas Crane, son of Joseph Crane Jr. married his aunt Betsy Cranes's daughter Sarepta, i.e. his first cousin. I don't have time to pursue it now, but there may be a connection between William Debout Crane's wife Nancy Potter dau. Samuel Potter, s/o Caleb s/o Col Samuel; and Daniel Doty (1765-1848)'s first wife Elizabeth Potter, d/o Amos Potter.
Thank you for the Crane information, which has cleared up my understanding of these Crane-Doty connections. Do you agree with my conclussions? Is there anything which doesn't fit or anything you can add?
